By Sarla Donovan THE FUTURE of mountain bike trails in Urumau Reserve are in doubt as a rift within the Lyttelton Reserves Management Committee deepens. The trails have been developed since 2009, but committee secretary Brian Downey told Bay Harbour News yesterday there were too many, and they could be affecting the stability of the reserve’s steep hillside slopes. He said the issue of mountain bike trails had caused a “very definite split” among committee members and up to two thirds of the 16 members were against them. The city council is currently looking at a plan to improve recreational opportunities in the reserve, increase public access, enhance birdlife and control weeds. A city council leaflet outlining the reserve development proposal was sent to nearby residents last week. •Turn to page 7 •Soapbox, p10

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK THIS WEEK reporter Sarla Donovan catches up with the godfather of New Zealand surfboard making – Denis Quane. Quane surfboards have been a household name (if you’re a surfer) over the decades, and the man himself still lives locally, albeit after several years shifting back and forth because of the quake. Denis has spent a lifetime shaping and making surfboards, and now there’s to be an exhibition celebrating his work early next year. It’s part of the Duke Festival of Surfing, the biggest surfing festival in the country, held in New Brighton for the past three years. Sarla talks to Denis on pages 4-5. Congratulations to Ferrymead Bays - the first club to win five Mainland premier titles (see page 13). – Barry Clarke

News Exhibition will celebrate godfather of By Sarla Donovan THE GODFATHER of New Zealand surfboard-making doesn’t have a board of his own. Denis Quane sold his last one 18 months ago and since then he and wife Chris have been busy shifting back into their rebuilt house on Moncks Spur. Out for six years after the February 22, 2011, earthquake, the Quane’s are relieved to finally be home after shifting around half a dozen places, from Clifton Hill to Cashmere and even out to Rolleston. Normally he’d be out surfing come summertime, as a longtime member and patron of the Sumner Longboarder’s Club. But this summer Mr Quane, 75, might need to take some time off. Not only does he need to make himself a board, he’s also due to go in for surgery after ripping a tendon in his shoulder, slipping on icy ground at the Mt Hutt skifield car park. Mr Quane has spent a lifetime shaping and making surfboards, and now there’s to be an exhibition celebrating his work early next year. It’s part of the Duke Festival

There were two wooden sheds on the old pier by the Beach Cafe. It used to go out about 30-40m and when the original surf club was taken off the middle of Sumner Beach, it was transported down to St Leonards Square for the cricket club.

surfboard making “They then built a couple of wooden sheds on that pier for the surf club. When the new one was built over at the bottom of Clifton Hill, I got permission to demolish one of the sheds and take it away. I took it down piece by piece and rebuilt it in the back of my parents’ place on Nayland St.” Like many early surfers, Mr Quane came to the sport through surf lifesaving, after joining the Sumner club in 1953. “When I was 13, some older guys started fooling around with polystyrene and made a seven foot foam board. I was the only one small enough to ride it, and I just kept riding it through high school.” He went on to design and build a series of surf skis, race boards and hollow plywood boards. When the orders began pouring in, he quit his job with a stock and station company and started Quane Surfboards. Operations shifted from the garden shed to a shop opposite the Hollywood Theatre, next to the butcher and the fish and chip shop. A shift to Redcliffs followed, into what’s now the Menz Shed, before moving into general fibreglass work with
Quane Industries in Maces Rd. The fibreglass operation, (things like freezing works tubs and garden ponds) came about following a downturn in the mid70s. Short boards came in and a lot of the older surfers couldn’t ride them – “most long boards got tucked away.” Dope-smoking became widespread, imported Japanese motor-cycles were coming into the country and people who had surfed started going into the back-country, leaving surfing and going biking instead. “It became uncool to be a surfer at that stage. You could go down to Sumner at the weekend, there might be four or five people there.” He kept making boards on and off throughout the downturn though and eventually surfing took off again in the early 80s. A few years later, Mr Quane opened his first retail shop, Surf Dive and Ski on High St. When it became a one-way street, he shifted to Oxford Tce, then Colombo St and later combined with Snowline Sports to open Snow and Surf in Tuam St. After nearly 60 years of making and shaping boards he still has
a shaping bay in Ferrymead, working up to a dozen boards a year before sending them to a factory in Woolston for finishing. Special orders only though. A Quane board will set you back around $2000, while an overseas-made one might retail for about $1500. The planned exhibition will feature the third board he made, a hollow plywood. He’s got no idea where the first one might be, or even if it’s still around. “We used to have agents all over the country so I don’t know where they all went. We sent a couple over to the Channel Islands at one stage and a shipment of about 30 to Venezuela. They pop up all over the place. There’s still a lot around we made in the 1960s. It depends on how they’re used, how long they last.” For the exhibition, Mr Allard is hoping to get 150 Quane surfboards altogether and currently has about 70. •If you have a Quane surfboard tucked away you would be willing to lend for the exhibition, phone Simon Allard on 021 668 347.

By Sarla Donovan BART VANDENDOEL loves dogs and photography. So it seems only natural he’d want to set up a specialist dog photography business. For the last few weeks, he’s been taking photos of dogs and their owners on Sumner Beach. The Dutch national, who is here on a working visa, has a part-time job at Hanafins at Bart Vandendoel Northlands Shopping Centre, and does photography work the rest of the time, including weddings, portraits and landscapes – but animal photography is his passion. Living in Sumner, Mr Vandendoel said is an animal photographers dream. “When I came here, I was thinking all those people with all those dogs running over the beach; it looked like the perfect place for me to continue doing what I love.” “For three weeks, I just kept going to the beach and taking photos for people and they wanted to know where they

could find the photos. I quickly made a Facebook page called sumnerbeachdogphotography. It’s just lifted off from there.” He says every animal is different. “How I photograph them depends on the dog. I want to see how the owner reacts with them before I decide how to shoot.” He said Sumner is a very special place to take photographs, with the sea, the

He says he’s not sure about the idea that dogs look like their owners (or vice versa). “I haven’t seen much resemblance in the photos I’ve taken her in Sumner yet, but in the
past, I’ve had someone I used to live next to – he was 65, an old man, and every day he would go out on his porch for a cigarette. Old as he was, he had a moustache and the dog that he had also had a grayish moustache and he limped a bit, just like the owner – or maybe he was even copying him, you never know. And whenever he would sit on the porch smoking a cigarette, the dog would sit next to him and just pretend like he was also smoking a cigarette. You do see it sometimes, but not as often as people say.” “I think maybe I’ll offer a free session if people think a dog looks completely like their owner. I think I could do some funny things with that.”

Bumper stickers saying “Vote No Lyttelton MTB Plan” have been spotted around the township and one has been stuck on the proposal’s information sign at the Foster Tce entrance to the reserve. But committee member, Luke Hollister, who is in favour of the trails, said neither was appropriate. “It’s underhanded and misleading. This isn’t a vote – it’s a consultation document designed for people to have their say on what they want to happen in the reserve. It’s everybody’s reserve.” A member of the committee for the past year, Mr Hollister has also helped develop and build mountain bike trails in Urumau Reserve since 2009. “It’s become quite a contentious thing, which to me, as a parent and a ratepayer and a cyclist and a person that likes native plants is a bit weird - because it is a recreation reserve and it’s designed to provide facilities for everybody. I think that’s what the plan puts forward.” Mr Downey didn’t know who was responsible for the paper strips or bumper stickers. Help save lives at sea By Sarla Donovan SUMNER LIFE Boat service is looking for volunteers. Operating since 1898, the service is one of the oldest in the country, and established well before the coastguard. It performs a variety of open water rescues and travels as far as Timaru and Kaikoura. The service is having an open day for potential volunteers to meet the crew and have a look at the staBlair tion and vessels. Quane A lot of their work involves rock and surf rescues, said club coxswain Blair Quane. “We get people trapped on rocks around the local bays and we do a fair bit in the surf. All our volunteers are trained to drive boats and swim in the surf. It’s a wide range of activities from towing broken down boats to picking up surfers stuck in a rip through to police operations, which is mainly body recoveries.” About 23 volunteers help to provide the 24-hour service. “We’ve got a wide range of ages and backgrounds,” unit safety officer Marnie Kent said. “Retirees, builders, business owners, a muscian. Anyone who’s interested in the sea.”

They can be out in the boat for up to eight hours so volunteers are kitted up with gear. “We put them in wetsuits, helmets, gloves, booties and have food and refreshments on-board,” Ms Kent said. Volunteers need to be capable swimmers and enjoy going offshore on a boat. Lyttelton’s mountain biking paradise Greg Jack is president of the Lyttelton Mountain Bike Club. He writes about how Lyttelton is tapping into the growing popularity of mountain biking through the Urumau Reserve trail network With stunning views overlooking Lyttelton to the west and the expanse of the harbour to the east, the conveniently located Urumau Recreation Reserve now sports 4km of mountain biking and walking trails. The addition of Christchurch Adventure Park has helped to establish the city as one of the best biking locations in the country, if not the world, and will continue to encourage more locals to get out on a bike. Growing up I was lucky enough to have a nearby forest where I could play and explore, so it’s great to see kids able to get out riding and enjoying the great outdoors, right close to home. With mountain biking booming as a sport, regions such as Rotorua, Nelson and

Queenstown are actively being developed as great biking destinations to attract local, domestic and international visitors. Biking is good for business and Lyttelton shops are already benefitting from bikers from the ‘other side’ visiting Urumau Reserve. While there are many places you can walk around Lyttelton, Urumau Reserve is the only
place you can go mountain biking. This factor has led the Lyttelton Mountain Bike Club, Lyttelton Reserve Management Committee, city council and Lyttelton Port Company to work together over the past eight years to create the current trail network. The trails through the pine forest have been hand-dug by bikers at an average rate of 2m/h, but are now also being enjoyed
by walkers and runners. The generally steep terrain means the trails are suitable for intermediate or advanced riders. They vary from smooth, bermed trails to tight, twisty, single tracks and steeper, swooping, technical trails. There’s something for everyone, a part from beginners, which is something I’d love to see changed. There’s great potential to
add an easier ‘XC’ trail on the eastern side of the reserve and the proposed development plan supports the idea of joining the LPC track to the Urumau traverse track, forming a wide, low-angle, shared use loop track. There is already much excitement for such a familyfriendly loop track, but strong community support and funding are still needed for these initiatives to be realised. If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to check out the trails and take in the stunning views, whether by bike or on foot. Signs point the way from the end of Foster Tce, but the best trail map and information is available via the Trailforks website or smartphone app. If you’re a local rider, I’d encourage you to join the Lyttelton Mountain Bike Club (www.lytteltonmtb.club). If you want to throw your weight behind the loop track concept, or just ‘have your say’ on the Urumau Reserve Development Plan, you can do so on the city council website. Bays first to claim fifth title Now eyeing up English Cup final By Gordon Findlater FERRYMEAD BAYS have turned their attention to achieving the double after becoming the first club to win five mainland premier league titles at the weekend. Bays sprinted home in their title race against Cashmere Technical, defeating now relegated Western 4-0 at English Park on Saturday to capture the league title in the final round. They now have the chance to win the English Cup when they face Cashmere in the final at English Park on Saturday. Bays will look to defend the cup which they won 12 months ago, while Cashmere will try to claim a piece of silverware after missing out on the MPL and being bundled out of the Chatham Cup at the weekend. “We’re certainly under no illusions as to how hungry they will be to win the English Cup,” said Bays coach Danny Halligan. Bays established themselves as contenders early in the season when they started with six straight victories, including a 1-0 win over Cashmere. It didn’t take long for the two clubs to end 11:51:35 up in a two 1/05/2014 a.m. horse race, which went right down to the final round.
“The last month or so we’ve looked at it like it was a cup final every week. We were reliant on Cashmere to drop points which meant we had to keep the pressure on every week,” said Halligan. For many Bays players, it was their first MPL title with the club, with just veteran goalkeeper Adam Highfield, defender Ciaran Aherne, midfielder Chris Murphy and forward Geoff MacIntyre part of Bays previous title winning team. After a celebration at the weekend, it has been business as usual for the newly crowned champions. If they can
complete the double, Saturday night could be even bigger and better. “That’s what young lads look forward to. They don’t need much of an excuse do they. With it being the final game of the season, a victory would certainly add a special touch to the night,” said Halligan. Bays have a full squad to select from for Saturday’s final. However, Cashmere will be without captain Tom Schwarz who is serving a suspension after being sent off in their Chatham Cup semi-final defeat to Onehunga Sports. The English Cup final kicks off at 2pm.

Bay Harbour Keep it News Lyttelton Bakery – Taste the goodness Dessert lovers from far and near are driving through the Lyttelton Tunnel in hoards for the Willy Wonka type gourmet sweet treats at a small Lyttelton bakery. Chocolate-filled syringes stabbed into doughnuts, jelly tip cheesecakes and cookie cake stackers are just some of the gems flying off the shelves at the Lyttelton Bakery. “I went from making 30 doughnuts a day to 350 a day. Saturday is passing 800,” said Bree Scott, owner of Glamour Cakes, based at the Lyttelton Bakery. “My order book is completely full until Christmas, which is great and so fun! The community has truly embraced our

goodies and we’re so appreciative that our customers love and enjoy the treats. Besides, that’s our goal at Glamour Cake and the Lyttelton Bakery, to create food people, love to enjoy.” Bree, is the 2014 New Zealand Baker of the Year and founded Glamour Cake, the newest craze taking over the small port town. Baking for about six years, the Sumner local completed her three-year apprenticeship at the Lyttelton Bakery after finishing Catholic Cathedral College.
In 2015, she worked at a boutique bakery in Sydney making “ooh la la-type cakes”, she said. On returning home from Australia, she developed her own unique gourmet flare to showcase through her treats. “I really wanted to do something different. It’s not your everyday doughnut. And it’s really caught on with our customers.” Bree adds. She posts her daily creations and updates to her Glamour Cake Facebook page which has more than 26,000 likes. “Social media is amazing,” Bree adds.
“I never expected it to go this big with so many people, this fast.” “All the hard work has paid off.” She smiles. Due to the company’s fast growth this year, meeting demand on her own has been difficult. On top of her average 70hour work week excluding Sundays, she now has one permanent assistant. Bree feels privileged to be doing what she loves every day, by creating products which make people happy. “I love how our food is bringing people to Lyttelton. We lost a lot of people and buildings because of the earthquake. This ‘food’ draw is helping people forget or overcome their fear of the tunnel with delicious, yummy treats in our picturesque waterfront community. After losing their London St site after the 2011 earthquakes, Lyttelton Bakery was in a portocom for more than four years before moving to their spot at 8 Norwich Quay. The passion for baking runs in the family. Bree’s father Ian Scott, owner of the Lyttelton Bakery, said the rise of Glamour Cake put Lyttelton back on the map. “We’re very proud of Bree, she’s doing extremely well and teaching the old boy new tricks.” Ian says with a hint of pride in his reply.
